Got to ride in a BMW Z8 on Monday.

Our university received one years ago (from BMW I assume) and has since been using it for streetbraking demonstrations. Basically each student of this course gets to sit in the passenger seat with some fancy equipment to measure acceleration under braking. The driver brings it up to around 60km/h (he had to floor it pretty good because our testtrack is kinda short) and slams on the brakes to a full stop.

The sound of the 5litre S62 is pretty damn nice and braking performance is actually rather decent for such a heavy car. We did like 20 of these runs and the brakes never even smelled a little bit. Braking was consistent aswell at around 1g (10.48 m/s² on my turn) through all the runs. I imagine we could have reached higher numbers with stickier tires and warmer road temps.

The ABS worked perfectly only really locking the tires up for a few miliseconds on a few runs.

Still don’t think the cars are worth the atleast 200k € people are asking for them.

Soooooo....your university should definitely sell that thing. Couldn’t you use just about anything for those tests?

Do you know if they upgraded the rotors, since braking hard from 60kph is presumably all they ever do with this car?

Well obviously you could but it’s more fun this way. Also half of the VIN is filed out to prevent the car from being sold or registered.

As far as I know it’s all stock. Obviously it’s not the first set of pads and rotors on the car anymore :D

Hahah I’m all for using a fun car for the testing; don’t get me wrong. In fact, I’m so in favor of it, that I think you guys should have three or four fun cars for the price of one!

I have a cousin in South Jersey that could remedy that little issue... ;)
